I've never had any problems with this ROM + stock CM7 kernel. Except the known "airplane mode wipes APN data" bug. It is very solid and has good performance and battery. The other kernels & ROMS may claim to be better in benchmarks and battery, but I haven't noticed anyone actually do a semi-scientific comparison. And a lot of tweaks seem to introduce new problems.
To see what recent Gingerbread commits are worth rebuilding, go to http://r.cyanogenmod.com and click merged. The column that shows gingerbread are the ones that are relevant to this ROM. And even then most of the recent commits are for other devices. The RC3 name bump is for more drastic changes to other CM7 devices, nothing that affects the G2x much.
UPDATE: Apparently latest CM7.2 nightlies work with the March baseband, but broke compatibility with older basebands. Here's the commit, unless someone writes code to check which binary to use depending on which baseband is installed, it'll be either a pre-march 2012 BB ROM or post-march 2012 BB ROM.
UPDATE2: CM7 build 20120610 & later should be compatible with both old & new basebands.
