Okay, but are boot.imgs even possible to flash right now? I heard that doing so results in a softbrick. (through fastboot)

Also, can't we just circumvent the limitations of the recovery right now by booting into recovery through fastboot?

You must flash the boot image from a pc using fasboot then back out of fastboot and into recovery then flash the Rom. Always make sure the Rom is on your sd card before flashing the boot image

Edit
I just did it with the nocturnal Rom no problems at all.

Default Order to get 1.85 rooted with CWM

I current have 1.73 rooted. I want to get to 1.85 and want to confirm the order.

1) Unlock Bootloader - http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1671396

2) Install CWM Recovery - http://briefmobile.com/how-to-instal...-htc-one-x-att

3) Install 1.85 RUU

4) Install SuperSU via CWM Recovery - http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1673935

5) Recovery apks and settings via Titanium Backup (Restore)

The one question I have is step #3 - Install 1.85 RUU. I have only seen the executable which will wipe everything. Is there any way to upgrade to 1.85 via CWM recovery since the OTA update is not available yet. I really wanted to avoid having to do Step 5 to recovery all my apps and settings.

Thanks in advance,
JR

As far as I know the desktop ruu is the only way right now. Between steps 2 and 3 you also will have to relock bootloader before running the ruu update. Keep you unlock bin file you get after unlocking with super cid cause after you upgrade this same token is used to unlock again.

You can flash this via CWM:

But it wipes phone data as well.

There is another way that doesn't require the RUU ofcourse you will need to be bootloader unlocked to do this.
I was on 1.73 and was able to upgrade to 1.85 without running the RUU.
All you do is fastboot flash the boot.img on Nocturnals download site then go to recovery wipe /system then flash his 1.85 rom and your done no need to lock bootloader run RUU re unlock bootloader reflash recovery you don't need to do any of that.

Here is Nocturnals step by step guide if you need it

Connect phone to computer, reboot into Hboot, and go into fastboot mode.

Open cmd prompt. Type the following to relock: fastboot oem lock

Run the RUU.

To unlock again: The bin file that you used to unlock originally may/may not work again. Reports vary, I was able to use the same one. In that case just:

Connect to PC, again in fastboot. Open cmd promt. Type: fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin

If it doesn't work, you may need to get another unlock token from HTCDev.com

This guide will probably be helpful:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1678138
He repackaged the tools into one zip, but I think its basically the same thing as you described, just more detailed.

Also, according to the tutorial, you don't actually have to unlock before you run the RUU. Just make sure you root, and change to SuperCID before RUU. Similarly, you don't need to install CWM until after you RUU and unlock bootloader. Personally, I didn't know any better, and was paranoid. So I:

Root
SuperCID
Unlock
Install CWM
Relock
1.85 RUU
Unlock
Install CWM

Not sure, but I think that the RUU wiped out CWM. It wasn't there after the RUU (just standard recovery) so I had to install again. So pretty sure the extra CWM install in the middle is extraneous.
