That's basically the problem, yes. When the phone's on, I can pull, push, go into the shell..all the usual stuff. But as soon as it goes into recovery, I get a 'device not found' error.

Thanks man! I finally rooted my arc at 4.0.4. First time I was stuck at "waiting for device" so I tried to change USB connection mode from MTP to MSC and it worked.
