Default [Q] Installing different modems?

Hey everyone. I'm still fairly new to Android...this being my first Android phone though I got it back at the end of March.

Anyway, right around when the first ICS leaks became available I read up on how to root my phone, put CWM recovery on, and how to put a custom ROM on. I've been running the Objection ICS rom from about 1-2 months ago and its starting to get bogged down and I want to try out a new ROM.

However, when I check all the threads in the Android development section there are all these acronyms about using certain modems that I don't understand and weren't there 1-2 months ago when I was experimenting with the various ROMs. In my About Phone it says I'm on i717UCLC5 as the baseband.

Do I have to do something special with my modem to use these various mods, or is the modem included in the CWM recovery zip that I flash? What does having different baseband modems do?

DONATE TO ME
Modems are binaries that handle the cell data/signal

They are usually contained within a ROM, if for some reason you need to change, there are stand alone zips of just the modems.
