The app drawer icon's trace can still be seen, even with the screen set at highest brightness, if you're paying very close attention.

The same happened when I replaced the SMS icon (which was right in the right side of the app drawer icon) with a white one (was stock until now - green). Its trace was left on the screen at least in some ammount (don't immagine it is 100% visible, like the pop-up is transparent). Of course I went back to using the stock icon right away
And that new white SMS icon was displayed in that specific part of the display just for a few seconds...

Guess we have a new definition of screen burn-ins : they happen no matter how much the exposure time. The risk of them being more visible overtime increases with the brightness . Screw you, Samsung.

I've had this same ghosting issue with 3 of my devices. From my experience, the units with the most ghosting also had grainier screens at lower brightness, but had the best colors and non purple greys. But having said that, the image retention is visible for more than twice as long as the other SGNs I had that had different issue. The other units had various screen issues such as grey purples, half the screen being purple tint, banding, etc. For the last 4 replacements, I've requested a non Made in China in February device, but that's all they send me. Non existent quality control for those units.

I just got off the phone with Samsung and they refuse to send me another replacement, citing the 14 days is from the original purchase date. This is inconsistent with the 4 additional tickets for advance replacements I opened outside the original 14 day period for the faulty replacement devices I received. The last time I spoke with someone, they wanted me to email pictures to ECR@sta.samsung.com, so an "engineer" can take a look at the issue and decide how to proceed. This is pretty much a complete lie because this is the email for Executive Customer Relations (which I doubt "engineers" monitor) and no one responded. Today I had to follow up after they didnt respond for over a week. After following up, and explaining my issue to a new person each time they transfered my call, I finally got a hold of someone at ECR. They told me they "could not duplicate the issue" and I would have to send my device in. I assume this means they looked at my pictures, but I cant be sure and no one has responded to my email. They would not offer me a refund. They also would not acknowledge any screen issues.

Overall, I like the GN because it is a Nexus device, but I cant say I like Samsung. Their service hasnt been very good. I dont think it's acceptable to "transfer" me to a different department when the department is closed for the day (leaving you on hold indefinitely, until you've had enough and decide to hang up). Nor is it acceptable to NOT call someone back when you say there will be a follow up within 24 hours (happened 3 times, I ended up follow up after waiting 48 hours for them to call me). There's more, but this is turning into a rant, so I'll stop.

Default This is a very long post.

And on Facebook the top part of the appt, the same held true for the blue

Galaxy support shannon could totally be attributed to the brightness settings. I have not been back to visit him to see what is brightness is on. They also said there is no display setting like on the galaxy s 2 for standard movies sports or whatever the setting is on that phone.
I did put it next to my friends galaxy s 2 he got for free today at t mobile and it also appear to be brighter than mine.

Would you agree with that t mobile reps that is not a big deal. Maybe it is also a problem it is typical and cannot be fixed. Or would you consider sending the phone back. I have had it for 5 weeks all else is fine so I just don't know.

Thank you for anyones help at all.
Well, next time you visit him set both phones on max brite. Install Screen Test and see how bright each color is. I know for a fact that my Galaxy Nexus's screen is a LOT brighter than the S2/Note/S3 (also set on max brite, with Standard mode).

Anyway, I compared my Galaxy Nexus to a display unit that was placed in a Vodafone store... The display unit is there since January : thus, specific burn-ins (for example, the lockscreen ring) have appeared. The gray background from the Settings menu is actual GRAY on that unit, while my phone has it purple (when the brightness is at its lowest). The whites are more white on my phone, though - they were more gray on the display unit. Overall, mine was brighter - but the display unit definetly had homogenous full whites.

Well, my screen has those, too. Especially when on low brightness - actually, as I increase the brightness, the banding goes away entirely. It's not too bad when on low brightness, but it's there...

Also, ghosting comes in. For example the app drawer icon (which is white, meaning it activates the entire sub-pixel matrix) is visible on a gray background afterwards, and goes away after a few seconds (~10 or so).

Full grays become purple when the screen is set on 0% brightness. At least on my unit... and I'm definetly not the only one.

Oh, that's right. The thing I reffer to as ghosting is the image retention you're talking about. Just so you would know

My phone has the best colors I've ever seen. I had the S2 before. Well, here's the thing. The colors on the S2 did not tend to go feint when you lowered the brightness - they seem to do so on the Galaxy Nexus. But put side by side to a S2, on full brite, the GN seems a LOT better.

I don't see much grainy effect. Well, it's there - when the brightness is lowest or near that point - and is especially visible on grays or whites. Also, the whites are not homogenous : purple tint to the upper-left corner, light-blue tint to the lower-right corner (but overall, it's not so bad - it's only visible when reading articles, and guess what, that's what I do).

My device is Made in China by Samsung . Do you think there are units manufactured in other countries, as well? I believe the ones made in Korea are for Korea only - if there are any. The S2 I had before, though, was made in Korea, as I recall (but I might just as well be wrong).

Even the iPhone is made in China. My previous Motorola ATRIX was, too. The HTC Desire, as well. But I guess each company has its own principles and its own ways to kick people in the butts when proven their QC sucks... or lacks entirely.

I don't think QC lacks entirely, though. I mean... at least there aren't problems with other hardware than the screen. If QC were to suck that much, I believe we would have had falling-apart cameras or such

Of course they can't duplicate your issues... Most people don't actually look that carefully at the phone. When they get a phone into service, they look at it for a few seconds, and if their eyes are closed, of course they consider you a retard and... oh well, I guess you know how Customer Support goes from there (as in bad). I know I experienced that... with a ****ty Motorola Z8 which wasn't taking charge anymore - they first replaced the USB port, then the battery, THEN the flex cable (which I told them to look at in the first place). Oh well...

Some people intentionally say they can't replicate the issue you're having just so they get out of paperwork or the trouble/effort to replace your device... Others do that just because the CEO tells them so (and that's the case here, I believe). I doubt Samsung engineers are that retarded/blind .

That's why I always call back the services I call to and put me on hold, from another phone, and swear at them as hard as I can. They being told not to help customers... I might be okay with that (like 5%), but they putting me on hold for such a long time or never calling back... I'd slit their throats for that.
Did my post help you? Did you like my post? Do you hate me? Regardless. Hit the button!

I made a little research and it seems it's a problem in the manufacturing of every new SAMOLED HD screen (Galaxy Note, Razr and Galaxy S3 all have the same screen issue).

I just wanted to know whether any "perfect" black Nexuses exist or not.

Other than that, my screen is fine, no pink grays or banding as far as I can see.

Yes there are only a few that have perfect screens.

Default gradients

My new Nexus has some strange gradients that are the more visible the lower the brightness (really bad with screen dimmed on 2). With a grey screen they're really visible, white it's okish, single colors it but yellow 's pretty much invisible. It's light at the top and right and dark at the left.
I tried taking a photo but that doesn't make the issue that obvious, so i tried to draw a picture showing it as well.

Is this normal or do I just have a bad display?

Thank you

I did the screen test

Funny it appeared, not totally opposite, just different

It appeared his colors, except for red and white which were almost exactly the same, were simply darker and had a tad more color than mine.

Mine on the other hand appeared not washed out like I thought, but brighter

So again, different, not worse

So, lt seems to me, I don't agree that onlyba few screens are good. But rather, a lot are good, and a few bad. But in that 'lot' that are good, a vast majority differ ever so slightly.

Thanks for recommending that appt and your help, and anyone else's

hello, i just got my gnex, and it seems that there is a small issue with the screen.

you can only see the problem in the contacts app (there might be more apps that could show this problem, but so far, contacts is the only one)

when i go on the contacts app, there is faint gradient half circle starting from the bottom middle of the screen, extending upto little past middle of the screen.

it is very noticable when i pull down the status bar over it. the half circled spot would get lighter then the rest of the pull down status bar background.

and the circle blinks time to time while changing it's size.

is this a defect?

I got a GNex a few days ago, quite literally had it for just the weekend (managed to get it Friday so I could get it activated with T-Mo). At first I noticed that everything looked kind of gritty, especially things like the grey area around letters when composing a message, but I got used to that and don't really see it anymore. However, I am now horribly aware of ghosting / image retention at low brightness levels. I'm planning on contacting google to get a new device, but my questions are: Does anyone know if I will indeed get a NEW device or a refurb (possibly my current one with just a new screen), and what are the chances that I will just end up with other problems / the same issue? My friend has a VZW GNex, and has had absolutely no problems with it. As far as the non-screen aspects of the device, I absolutely love it.

Maguro / takju (had Wallet when I got it)
