yep, this solution worked like a charm for me. a nice thing about it is not only root & CM, but an unlocked bootloader also.

Sent from my espresso using xda app-developers app

when i go into "install rom from sd card" and then i pick the "gapps-gb-20110613-signed.zip" then i have 3 check box (wath to do here?), so i just push "ok" and the phone restart first time with a question mark in red on the screen, then restart again without any problem, but then i try to open the market app and it close immediately. so now i cant sync my contacts or calendar. please help!
I know this is an old question, but I had it too, so I thought I would answer it to help others. I am thankful for this awesome tutorial, but I did get stumped.

1) On Step 21, if you have tried it and failed to install Google Apps, you may be like me and not patient enough and Rom Manager might have hung, so reboot the phone.
2) Once rebooted go to the eye with the hat "Rom Manager" I am using 5.0.0.7 for reference. Click the first option "Flash ClockworkMode Recovery" and wait. I think mine took 3 or so minutes. It will appear to do nothing, then it will say Success! or Finished.
3) Now click "Reboot into Recovery". click OK
4) It will reboot into a DOS/ Command line based "GUI" with the first line highlighted. Used the Volume down button to move to "install zip from sdcard" and push the CAMERA button to select (the one on the lower right side. the shinny silver one!), NOT the power button which acts as a Go Back button
5) Down volume to "choose zip from sdcard", and camera button again
6) Down volume to "gapps-gb-20110828-signed.zip" (I assume you already transferred this file or one similar to the SD card) and camera button again. At this point it should install and reboot.
7) Google apps should now be installed, or at least the Market, which will allow you to upgrade to Play store and install all the Google app goodness.

Installed PDAnet.
I found insanityrains post #24 worked for rooting the myTouch 3g slide running 2.2.1 after some other methods failed.
GargleSplat I ran into the same problem as you and your solution worked for me.
After I got cm7 installed I was seeing an error for "com.android.phone" closing unexpectedly every few seconds. I did a factory reset using recovery through hboot and this cleared up my problem.

All is working except whenever I slide the phone open everything on screen shifts to the right and the overflow wraps to the left. The flex ribbon has already been replaced once and the phone exhibited similar behavior before the old flex cable tore causing the screen to go black. I'm not sure if its a hardware problem or software problem.

when I downloaded cyanogen (latest of course) and renamed it to update.zip and included the google apps on the root of my phone I go into the recovery menu to load it.

I keep getting the "failed to verify whole-file signature" message again and again. I've tried different sd cards and even different versions of cyanomod. what am I doing wrong!?

I'm going crazy here. Why do I keep getting these "whole-file signature verification failed" messages EVERY time? I'm on 2.1 update 1 but I can't seem to get the update.zip to get verified (and no, I didn't name it update.zip.zip by accident)

I've been researching this over and over and looked around a million different places and can't seem to get a straight answer. please guys, somebody tell me that I'm retarded and I'm overlooking some obvious step
