Default No data connection after root

I pulled the SIM card and SD card from my phone and rooted my Captivate I897 using the method described in the original post -

1: Flash I897UCKF1-AutoRoot-DesignGears.tar for root with Odin by Placing it in the PDA slot
CLICK START.
2: Boot once, (it will install root) then shut down.
3: Download mode again!
4: Reflash the original KK4 kernel by placing it in the PDA slot in ODIN (If you do not change the kernel back to KK4 after root, you could have wifi issues)
CLICK START.

All went well with the root process. I flashed both tar files. The problem is, I have no data connection since rooting the phone. I have wifi and phone but no data. I had data prior to rooting the phone.

Phone info -

Samsung-SGH-I897
Firmware - 2.3.5
Baseband - I897UCKK4
Kernal - 2.6.35.7-I897UCKK4-CL614489
Build - Gingerbread.UCKK4

The strange thing is, if I go into the default network setup and switch to manual, I see my regional carrier along with T-Mobile and AT&T. If I pick my carrier it tells me that I am registered on the network. The same goes for T-Mobile. If I try to connect to AT&T I get - Your SIM card does not allow a connection to this network - which is what I have always gotten with AT&T. I have even recreated the APN for my carrier. I have pulled the SIM card, rebooted, powered off, installed the SIM card and rebooted. The data icon does show up briefly during boot up and then disappears.

Do I need to flash back to stock and try rooting again or is there something I can do to avoid flashing back to stock?

Thanks

Bill

Tried that. It removes my APN and then I have no APN and need to recreate it. I bought this as a new unlocked phone so that I could use it on my carrier's network. Not due for a new phone until February and I hated the phone I had.

When I recreate the APN I again can see the three networks I mentioned previously. I manually connect to my carrier and it tells me that I am registered on the network. If I go into about phone > status I see the network name, the signal strength, mobile network type (EDGE), service state (in service), mobile network state (Disconnected), my IMEI, IMEI SV (00), MAC Address, Bluetooth address.

If I put the SIM card back into my old phone, I have a data connection.

Got it.
The Captivate will only get the Edge on T-mobile because of the frequencies they use.
So, what frequencies does ur carrier use ? That should b the answer to ur problem.

I've got my data connection back. Seems I missed one step in the root process. I thought that I had Busybox installed on the phone. I found that I did not. Once I installed it, my data connection returned. I don't know what installing a bunch of UNIX commands did, but it worked and that is all that matters.

that's odd. when I flashed my Capt from 2.3.3 to 2.3.5 UCKJ1 I didnt lose my APN settings at all.... it just booted and everything was working fine.

I didnt have Busybox installer at the moment of rooting my phone.

Right now I just flashed to ICS Team Nyx ICS 4.0.4 and so far so good.

I didn't lose my APN when I rooted the phone. I lost it when I did a reset to default. Most likely because there was no default to reset to. This was an unlocked phone when I bought it on Amazon.

Don't know why installing busy box would bring back my data connection. Just happy that it is back. Now if my regional carrier would just get their network upgrade (that they received a 12 million dollar grant for) I would be a very happy camper. It would mean no more living on the EDGE.

Default Build 1010?

hi,
My Captivate is one of the "difficult" ones, with the Build 1010. I didn't ever take it back when it was under warranty because it rarely displayed the rebooting problem. So, fast forward several months, and two OS upgrades (totally AT&T stock) and this thing is now driving me CRAZY! My question is... will this method work on this Build 1010 phone?

Somewhere I read that there was a certain way to root them. Of course, I don't want to brick it, I just want to root it and flash another (preferably ICS) rom. I also saw another method -(Utility) KK4 Easy Root - in the Development threads but I can't post there because I don't have enough posts yet...I'm just a lurker, what can I say?

Does anyone know if either of these methods work for certain on the Build 1010's?
Thanks in advance for any advice for helping me get the best use out of my Captivate!!

Current:

Firmware: 2.3.5

Kernel 2.6.35.7-I897UCKK4-CL614489

Just use the KK4 root utility in my signature. It will root your device just fine. I had one of these 1010 ones also. You'll be able to to install the Corn 7.0A kernel with the utility which will give you CWM. That will allow you to flash a new ROM.

A word of warning, some users experienced the Encryption Unsuccessful when running ICS builds. It renders your internal SD inaccessable.

OK, thanks. I've seen some Encyption Unsuccessful threads but hadn't read any of them. I guess I'll have to investigate further as to which ROMs, Kernels, etc., seems like a bunch of people are running ICS fine.

Anyway, I may try to call Samsung as was suggested in another thread. On the outside chance that they might warrant my phone even though it's out of warranty. But,if not, maybe I can find SOME other, ANY other ROM, to put on this phone, as it is becoming almost useless in it's current state.

Thanks for your help with the rooting direction!
