What you need to do is plug the phone in to charge. When it starts to turn on, pull the battery out and put it back. It will then sit there charging without trying to boot for a while. Watch the phone--after a while it will decide to try and boot again. Don't let it! Pull the battery again and then put it back. It will again sit there without trying to boot. Any time it tries to boot yank the battery. Keep this up for about three hours and you should have enough battery power to charge.

Or you could purchase the external battery charger to charge the battery. You may be able to find them pretty cheap--when I got mine they were $5 on Amazon. There is an alternate method that may work that involves cutting a USB cable and attaching the correct wires on the battery terminals. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=892026 I considered doing this once, but then I realized that destroying a USB cable costs roughly the same as just getting the battery charger.
