Not wanting to get into a debate on this but I fear that there must be a hell of a lot more handsets with this fault but just the owners not realising it.
I was with a friend at the weekend who has the same phone, we both sat in the same location and compared wifi signal strength, mine that has just been replaced by HTC was perfect and full signal, his a HT23 one dot, got him to squeeze the top and hey presto full signal.
I just beleive that there are lots of One x's with the fault and people that just don't realise.
Exactly this. Most devices sold, I believe, will be to the casual user. The casual user will hook up to their WiFi at home and think, well that's not quite as good as my old (insert Desire, SGSII etc.) and be done with it. The rest works so all is good. We notice it because we are active forum users who visit sites like this near enough everyday. I'm not trying to say every single device is going to develop this fault at all. For the most part it may well be 1 in every 100, it could even be less than that. But to say it's isolated to just a handful or a couple dozen is just naive. The fact still remains that because this is a manufacturing defect the ones affected should be replaced and not repaired. It's becoming more and more obvious that the repairs are not working, so if the problem is indeed as isolated as is claimed they should have no problem recalling the couple dozen affected devices and giving out a couple dozen new ones
iPhone 3GS > Sony Xperia x10i > Htc Desire > iPhone 4 > HTC Desire > Samsung GS2 > HTC Desire HD > HTC Sensation XE > HTC One X
Just think how many more naive people don't realise its a hardware problem and presume the signal just isn't very good...
I think xda is the best place to discover real issues!
Using that logic though kind of minimizes your argument. For example, compare two other recent widespread issues - 1) Wi-Fi-gate on the Sensation, and 2) the faulty GPS on the Asus Prime. In both those cases the issues were discovered simultaneously across a broad range of sources. The Sensation issue was actually discovered by a Swedish media outlet in testing. Other than what's been fed to the online media via this thread, there have been no other reports of the Wi-Fi issue from anyone not knowing of this thread experiencing them. And even a device with "perfect" Wi-Fi is going to have Wi-Fi threads based on routers, bad hardware, etc. For example, the i9100 hated D-Link routers which resulted in poor range and battery drain.
I'm not minimizing the problem; it shouldn't have existed in the first place. But claims of the problem being widespread and catastrophic haven't (yet) been proven.
And I'm sure the problem will become even clearer over time, if people accidentally squeeze too hard or drop their phone.
You could be right. Why do you think only 92 people voted in the "Wi-Fi defect" poll that was started and that only 46 of them had "the problem" if it is indeed as widespread as some believe?
I've dropped my March-build HT23 at least six times in airports and on airplanes and it works the same today as when I first got it. My personal experience certainly doesn't prove anything but I don't think the phone's a ticking time bomb either. Only time will tell.
You're quite articulate, have a calm but firm writing style, and are great at documenting your experiences. Since Simon Harding, Head of 3 Operations, provides his name on customer form letters, why don't you send him a registered post summarizing what you've said here? While 3 aren’t responsible for manufacturer’s h/w defects, they've clearly treated you improperly and I'd like to think Simon would be aghast. I'd bet reaching out to him directly, even if he delegates the follow-up, will get you further then where you are now.
I am from India Mumbai.. I have a serious problem with the WiFi network and I have wasted a lot of time with these dumb HTC rep and its pointless. I am scared to give my phone to them coz my friend gave his phone thrice and same problem and in the end he had to sell the phone and got s3...

Sorry to hear you suffer this issue too, it is clearly really difficult to get anything done. I live in the UK so can't join you, but maybe someone reading based near you will get in touch.

Merci d’avoir choisi eXpansys !

In plain english expansys do not have info about this problem and have little returns on these models.
eventhough an HTC employee aknowledged the error here, it's not doing any good as long as the market, even HTC support it seems (the result with bigolivier confirms that the people who performed the support have no clue), are not officially made aware.
I haven't bought this phone yet, and decided today thet I won't be getting it, at least not the current batch. This seems more widespread than reported, and I believe more bad phones will appear as the phones are used.
Well, i fixed the issue myself by bending the pins but alass, after 2 - 3 weeks the issue is back.
Tried chatting with HTC support today but the *******(insert bad words)**** support-female-person kept banging on the fact that i have my device HTCdev unlocked and thus have NO WARRANTY!
i told her i, as a consumer, have the right to get a free repair since this is a fabrication error.
She told me that becouse of the changed software i have no warranty rights whatsoever.
This went back and forth until i was totally fed up with HTC and closed the connection.
First and foremost i will not accept that i have to do without my device for 2 weeks. That is just plain unacceptable.
Second i do not want to risk getting a repair bill becouse of HTC's BAD support mentality.
Third, i think i'm just gonna order a new case on ebay for about 40 bucks. Solder the contact points an swap the device to the new casing.
(wanted to change my grey device to white anyway )
This is definately the last HTC device i EVER buy.
