the ftf you have is the stripped one - it contains only kernel.sin and loader.sin (not the other components of a full ROM). Therefore you have no options like wipe data. All you have to to is selecting 'No final verification' and clicking 'Ok'.
Just restart your phone manually, it will not reboot itself, I have tried it many times..can anybody explain me what to do after that coz there is nothing in wipe data and nothing like Fota, system and baseband (IMAGE INCLUDED)

I think your 4.0.3 firmware is not the correct version.. Check also your Flashtool if its complete.. USB Debugging should be checked and MSC(mass storage mode). If the firmware that you have downloaded is the stripped one, maybe you should checked everything there as it is stripped (only kernel+loader).

If you want to have 4.0.4 on your phone, you should start at the beginning of the post..
Step 3 would just flush again the kernel of 4.0.4... If you want to follow the steps, download the regular ones not the stripped..
So it is "NO"...
how can i check if my flashtool is complete or not,i just download it frm above like,i installed all drivers and also ADB drivers with PCC

Download the 4.0.3 firmware the complete one, not the stripped (although stripped is also good, but haven't tried it).. Put it in the flashtool/firmware, be sure you can see the 4.0.A... in the Flashtool as you go in Flashmode...how can i check if my flashtool is complete or not,i just download it frm above like,i installed all drivers and also ADB drivers with PCC

Everything in the first post's link for download are complete.
You can also install the the drivers, flashmode and adb from your flashtool/drivers before you start the flashing method..
Hey, open your CMD and type "adb devices" and then enter.. You should see the serial number of your phone, if not follow this link after flashing is complete.

Hey bro, put the 4.0.A...firmware on your c:Flashtool/firmware (should be unzipped with .ftf extension)... Only the 4.1.B.. is on the firmware. I thnk you have downloaded the stripped one..
In the flashmode, select the proper firmware by clicking it ( not the 0000)...

Hey guys, just updated my ray with the steps above.
It took a while to learn everything from scratch, but I found the guide to be very helpful.
For the record, here were the gotcha's that I got from doing this:
1. I updated to 4.0.4 from the stock gingerbread build which ran the zergrush exploit to root it. My phone has it's bootloader locked.
2. The 4.0.3A file I got was a bit annoying to get from the 4share sites, since it asked for signing up and I really didnt want to do it. Downloaded it from somewhere else.
3. When I ran the run.bat file, it seems on the last reboot, my phone didnt reboot until I hit the enter key first, then it logged me a message about root and its groups. I thought it was waiting for a reboot on its own before I hit the last enter key to reboot, but it did it anyways.
4. After the flash with the flashtool, the log message said my phone was rebooting, but I found that it did not. I just simply unplugged the cable and manually restarted and voila! All the fun and goodness.
5. While I flashed to 4.0.3, the "about the phone" on my phone stated the package was still 4.0.4 (the letter B was on the build). I basically ignored this and jumped right to the next step of reflashing to 4.0.4. (also confirmed root was working by opening my terminal emulator and running SU).
Overall, amazing! its 4AM here but I say it was worth the effort to do!

Just follow the first post.. Just download the first links to really follow the guide, don't download the stripped if you dont know to do it your own..
I want to update to 4.0.4 (coming from 2.3.4 with root) using the method in the first post. But before I decide to do the upgrade, I'm wondering if the TFT in the OP supports the Dutch language? I live and bought the Ray in The Netherlands and I assume there is a Dutch release of 4.0.4 also (is this true or are all those ICS releases international?). Can I just use the files from the OP (because these are international?)?
The TFT on the OP is the official from SONY... If it supports Dutch in GB, why not on ICS....

Please explain in simple english as to what to do. Seriously sorry for letting my ignorance temper you up!

Hi, I see you have the 4.1.B .....so I dont think you can root with this ...first you need you flash the 'ready to root' rom(its 4.1.B.. too I guess)
..flash that, then root, then get the kernel only
and about the locked/unlocked bootloader, first of all please just google it

Preliminary step:
= First off, install full ICS 4.0.4. You have to be on ICS 4.0.4 in order to proceed.
= The easiest way to do so is to use Flashtool to flash 4.0.4 ftf and DE-SELECT wipe data! Thus your current apps will be kept.
= By installing 4.0.4, if you had root, you will lose it. But worry not, here is what you should do:
Follow this 3-step process:
1) By using the Flashtool flash only the kernel (kernel.sin + loader.sin) from ICS 4.0.3
= For flashtool, Unknown Sources and Debugging must be checked in phone settings
= Put the ftf file into the firmware directory of flashtool (usually c:/Flashtool/Firmware), open flashtool and select flash, then flashmode, chose the 4.1.A.... firmware and select exclude Fota, system and baseband , select 'No final verification' and DE-SELECT wipe data, cache and apps log. Click OK and follow instructions (power off phone, press volume down button and plug the usb).
2) Boot the phone and do regular Root_v5 hack + CWM installation (CWM-5.0.2.7-nAa-r2)
= When it's finished you can root with the Root_v5 tool following its instructions
= Now install CWM recovery by using the CWM Installer following its instructions
3) By using the Flashtool flash only the original kernel from the ICS 4.0.4 provided ftf.
= For flashtool, Unknown Sources and Debugging must be checked in phone settings
= Now do the same operation as 1) with 4.0.4 ftf file and you're done.

First you must have 4.0.4 on phone. I have updated my 4.0.3 via PCC to 4.0.4 (and I lost root). Then I made my own ftf.
If you have (non rooted) 4.0.4 on ray, than follow steps in #1. post
