I just noticed today that Average Android posted a new version in the Rootzwiki thread yesterday that supposedly should work for any ROM (assuming it does not have a modified signal_cluster_view.xml). Rather than do any xml edits he tried to replicate it with just png edits and creating them in such a way that they would align properly. I haven't checked it out yet. You could try that and see how it works since it's just png edits and does not require any compiling/decompiling. If not, I'll make another copy of the SystemUI with just that mod only and you can see if that works. Also, you could just push the SystemUI.apk to your /system/app folder with a root file browser rather than flashing it, and see if that makes a difference.
Yeah, definitely weird.
I've also tried different clockwork recovery versions and I get the same hang. I doubt it makes a difference but I have disabled the boot animation. Maybe I should restore all the boot options, disable any tweaks, and see what happens.
I thought about pushing the systemUI.apk but figured it was best to wait to see if I was doing something wrong. I'll let you know.
Overall, a flashable zip with just the signal mod would be great if you had time - definitely not trying to make this a "driving Miss Daisy" situation. :D
