ADB not working

Im hoping someone can help me. Kinda stuck. I have an i5500 that has unlock pattern but dont know it and gmail account not set up. I have put it into download mode to try and ADB Rebbot recovery with no joy. I have installed the samsung drivers tool and it has installed "Samsung USB Composite device" and "Samsung Mobile Modem". Is this right or am i doing something wrong.

I know it has a custom rom and recovery but it has been sat in my draw for about a year and cannot remember what they are..

If you want to get into Download mode, turn off the phone and press volume down+center(selection) button+ power button
Then use odin to flash new firmware.
