I've been using ICS and now jelly bean on my galaxy nexus (can't believe judge koh allowed an injunction) and it's really smooth.

Considering that g nexus only had a ARM cortex 9 dual core like the g tab 8.9, I'm inclined to believe that with official ICS kernel support and custom jelly bean, tab 8.9 will hold well till the next 8.9 comes out.

I thought g nexus old dual core would force me to switch to galaxy s3, but with jelly bean, it seems fine to hold on to this till next year. Hopefully ICS and jelly bean will do the same trick for tab 8.9 too.

True, but there are just too many things lacking in the HW department. The processor sucks IMHO. My SGS2 phone is more powerful. While I didn't think the lack of a external storage would be that bad, it's become a PITA for me, where I have to spend time continually transferring files back and forth using samba or Dropbox. And the native portrait mode of the display gets annoying too.

Don't get me wrong, I've had my 8.9 since Day One. Technically before Day One, because I got one by mistake at Best Buy a few days before they were officially released. I've really enjoyed it, and as I said before, the 8.9" design is awesome. But when seeing other people's tablets, I just feel that the premium price I paid for this didn't get me too much premium hardware.

And Samsung hasn't been very good about giving us updated software. It's been way too long. I was thinking about even going to the Nexus 7, which also has a better processor then the GT8.9, but I don't think I could deal with a 7" tablet.

I feel for you 100% I got my first one on the week it was released paying full price too. But Samsung has failed us in terms of timely updates, especially for a WiFi model with no carrier baggage, while the tegra2 has been a disappointment. Still, in all justice, any dual core pales compared to an exynos. Which also makes me hope for a galaxy note 8.9, ... and if not, I guess then I'll choose between the new transformer prime or a galaxy note 10.1 after prices fall ... will be sad to leave 8.9 but that's my thought for the now!

I second this statement. Having seen how well JB operates on my Galaxy Nexus the last few days, I have faith that JB has the potential to improve the 8.9 experience tremendously. I will support any efforts at a custom JB rom for 8.9.

From what I've read, the first ota of official ICS has just rolled out for the smallest of our tablets. I'm hoping we will see a huge update to the rest of the family very soon, for AOKP custom or official ROMS. What's the word in the community? Anyone?

Edit: probably should of posted this in general as I'm sure everyone already knows this. For that I apologize.

interesting interview / statement by the aokp guys:
http://androidspin.com/2012/07/05/cm...p-have-to-say/

to sum it up:
milestone 6 is coming. it will be the LAST ICS release after that its full power towards JellyBean!
JellyBean is very similar to ICS which will make porting it a much simpler process than it was form GB to ICS!
So basically expect all devices that get/got the ics treatment to have a well running JB release aswell awesome!
