I intended to do the same, but after seeing ICS, I want it on my N1...
Getting ready to try out ICS soon (next weekend, after reading all there is about BCM and TexasIce.)
Once you do, take a nandroid of it. Then repartition your nand to give you 150 system, 10 cache, and the rest to data(i think around 280mb). Go back to a recent 7.2 build with intersectRavens kernel from January. I like ICS on my N1, but I LOVE CM 7.2 now.
ICS just is not as fast, efficient, etc. The reality is our phones are DATED. Just not enough horsepower for ICS in my opinion. Going back to CM7.2 has made me love my N1 all over again. Ill be good for another 6-12 months, or until something really amazing comes out of Google.

I repartitioned yesterday, and, to make sure it still works, just restored my CM 7.2 backup. No need to repartition back. And I'm using Simple2Ext anyway for my apps, so I don't care much about the size of the data partition.

Sure, the N1 is somewhat dated. A perfect thing to play with, then

I switch back and forth between CM7/9. I also use MIUI GB evey so often.
For me ICS CM9 is just as fast as CM7. I'm using a class 10 SD Card, so perhaps that helps. DK really has done a great job on his port. The only thing that puts me off is the lack of (fully) working video recorder. I really need that for capturing those special moments with the kids. Not worth missing out on that.
Makes me wonder if the video will ever be sorted out fully on the N1. And if it can't be fixed for ICS, then I'm not holding my breath for Jelly Bean either. Shame really.

Nexus One sporting BCM CM9 ICS. Thanks to dk_zero-cool
I also wonder whether we'll get a working JB on the N1. Bought a used one in mint condition and I've been hampering around for a while with various roms (CM7, BCM, MIUI) and I've seem to have settled for Hypersense Nova.
From what I've experienced, ICS roms still have issues to be resolved apart from the camera/video ones. I enjoyed some other minor benefits of ICS as the inverted colors in the browser (AMOLED ftw) and the better trackball settings in BCM. But a few of my favorite apps weren't that cooperative with ICS, usually regarding music apps, and I would experience lagging and FC at times. I'll be giving Evervolv a shot to see whether it is promising enough to wait for a JB rom from texasice. So far I don't regret buying it instead of some plastic samsung galaxy or nexus, my N1 had a share of falls already and it's as good as new. I hope devs will keep loving that little beast
Jelly Bean on N1, now that would be so cool.. but most likely and obviously like ICS it wont run perfect.. I moved on to G Nexus, but N1 is still a great phone to play with!

I'm doing exactly this. Installed Blackrose finally just to be able to reclaim the cache space for data (145 system/10 cache/281 data) wiped and freshly installed CM 7.2 stable. Just installed IR's latest kernel too, and I must say it's darn quick now.
I may try an ICS ROM eventually (I need working video too, also for capturing kid moments), but for now my trusty N1 is doing great!

I have been using for couple of months, I find it functional and stable.
If it was 100% working or 100% stable than there wouldn,t be any complains?
Check it properly,
as of now theres no single 100% ics rom working on N1,
bt can say that works like daily driver.

Well, BCM seems to be running at least as fast as CM7.
I had some problems with TexasIce, but BCM works great so far. I had to do a factory reset, then install BCM, and then restore my apps with TitaniumBackup. I haven't tried all apps yet, but I'm happy with the speed. And that's with a class 4 32-GB sd-card.
I am using simple2ext to have apps and dalvik-cache on the sd.
