Thanks for your thoughts and your original info Glenn. Yeah, I started on DG Nova and Univac 1108s so I don't disagree with anything you've said. And yeah I've run many 3rd party ROMs -- the Viewsonic would be unusable without them and the Optimus V nearly useless. However, this being a new tab I have been trying to stay close to stock for now. While I agree the quality is usually better, sometimes features are lacking due to proprietary blob problems, etc. For example, my Viewsonic hasn't had a working camera for some time and no hardware video playback for nearly as long. So kind of waiting to see.

In any event, I get that I have to get CWM out. The updated apparently doesn't know how to do that. There's no separate load of stock recovery as far as I can tell. So it seems like my choices are 1) leave well enough alone (yeah, but no); 2) Return to stock (total wipe), update, and then restore my stuff; 3) Try Kies and see if it will flash over CWM. 4) Just blow off stock and go to a new ROM. I guess 5 would be somehow extract the recovery from the stock load and burn it and then let the OTA complete.

Guess this will be my weekend project.

Thanks again!

Update: Ok, Keis managed to update the tablet. Lost root as expected. OTA Rootkeeper did not work (figured it would not, but tried anyway). The root process went fine just as before. Not much new to see on the update. Face lock and some new sounds/animations. You can change the screen shot icon to a few different things (although with Apex, applications just shows the home screens not the drawer).

Thanks Glenn!

I started to do the manual 4.0.4. update on my GT-P5113 until I read your post about it not being able to handle my CWM5.5.0.4 so sometime in the next 24 hours I'll try using KIES and follow your lead. Thanks!

If I find more than 3 or 4 annoying bugs in 4.0.4 I'll reinstall CleanROM V1.0 (not V1.1) which, IMHO, is currently the best of all the custom ROMs we have available for Tab2 10.1 GT-P5113. The most disappointing one I tried was Cyanogen. Over the past 2 years I've lost faith in Cyanogen ROMs for several of my devices because they seem to be cranking them out with less effort on debugging beforehand and they require more steps to install and go back to other custom ROMs.

Univac? Now you've reminded me of my days in college with punch cards!

Well in all fairness, I only suspect cwm couldn't handle it. The log file in /cache threw some unknown argument errors on the update and then got a signature mismatch. So it is possible I just got a bad download. And apparently once it fails, the OTA updater won't show you the update again for some period of time (someone suggested 5 days). It also handily wipes it out of /cache! The unknown argument (wish I had written it down) makes me think the stock recovery has some option cwm doesn't have. But I would have thought the signature matching would have been ok.

Or perhaps the update is in FIELDCODE ;) Or needs to be loaded off a FASTRAND drum? Geez we are showing our age!

I hear ya. Speaking of frustrations, I can't install the current version of KIES on my main home desktop system because it insists on having SP3 and my desktop runs best with XP SP2 so I'll have to try it with my office desktop. Not sure what you & others think of Windows 8 but based on my tests of the most recent preview, I'm starting to hope that Google keeps developing Android so it can become my everyday OS! IMHO, if Google adds a Virtual Windows Mode that allows installation of 16/32/64bit Windows apps, they'll become the most valuable company on Planet Earth.

I am pretty much 100% Linux-based. Had to borrow my wife's PC (Win7) to run Kies, although I can run it under VirtualBox. I didn't want to give it an excuse to fail.

I've found the most recent build to be very enjoyable! Yes, there are still some bugs, and it is a "nightly" build, but I find it adequate for daily use. And it's fast.

But, to each his own. I don't use CM9 on my phone yet.

After you installed the 4.0.4 update did you check download mode to see if the counter was reset to zero?

I have not, but will next time I boot. I doubt it though. Oh. On the Device Status it says "Device status: modified" -- so I'm guessing on a stock unit it does not? But the real count is on the bootloader screen, right?

Installed Windows XP SP3 on my office PC
so I could install latest KIES
so I could then download and install the 4.0.4 update on my rooted GT-P5113.

As soon as the update download and install is completed
(possibly this month at the slooooooow rate it's downloading),
I will reboot into download (ODIN) mode and report my findings HERE.
I'll also boot into Recovery to see if it replaced CWM5.5.0.4 with stock.

WHAT I DISCOVERED AFTER UPGRADING VIA KIES TO 4.0.4 ON GT-P5113:
1. Tab seems to boot faster and run smoother.
2. New sounds added by upgrade
3. Upgrade did NOT damage any of my installed desktop settings or apps except those that require root won't load
4. Upgrade changed recovery mode back to stock <3e>
5. Upgrade did NOT change download counter (ODIN Mode) back to zero (still shows # of Custom downloads)
6. Using my procedure in OP, I re-installed CWM5.5.0.4 and re-rooted without ANY problems.
7. I'm kind of liking the better speed & smoothness with the upgrade so I will play with it for a while
to see if I have any reason(s) to re-install a custom ROM.
8. in case anyone cares, the upgrade I received is Version 12.06.21.01 a/k/a PDA-LG2 CSC:LG2 (XAR)
