I was thinking earlier... We blame nvidia/lg/samsung/htc/etc of the fragmentation and slow upgrades...

But I really think Google is the real problem here.. They change the way to access or handle drivers in every single version..

Google can and must find the way to prevent this.. I mean keep that part of Android standart.. Like Linux does.. Linux drivers are the same since ages...

So it does not matter if Samsung/htc/lg/etc last centuries in deliver an update.. Since de drivers and the way to access are the same.. Any developer could just drop the universal kernel in the top of the new aosp code released plus their personal features/fixes and that's it... Screw OEMS.. That way Google is gonna really support open source and development.. And every single person will be free of choices.. They could get a new phone and get the latest oem crap or keep his old phone with the latest software... Pretty fair..

And most important Noone gets annoyed at oems because you can always have a fully functional device with just few days of delay between the aosp release and the port..

To compare Linux and Android is just wrong, as is to compare iOS and Android.
For the positive sides on Android there have to be some negative ones like fragmentation and update policies.
The big phone manufacturers need a system that allows a diverse variety of phones when there all on the same software, thats how it works in the computer market and in the phone market as well.
Try to buy a notebook with Linux on it an with full support, try to buy a device with iOS on it but without to pay the steep prices that Apple is asking for...hard to do.
It would be better to compare Windows and Android - try to get updates for your 2 year old notebook...see!

I think manufacturers should also release a google experience, completely open, version of their devices (at least for some), perhaps solely by online order or maybe in stores out of contract as well. That way they can satisfy people who don't care for their modifications either by such people buying such devices or by releasing faster updates for such devices so that whose who bought devices through subsidies can also get upgrades faster.

Maybe should is not the best word, its probably just something I'm hoping for, who knows how good it would be for manufacturers if they release an update for some of their customers (much) faster than for others. I hope at least google does it with motorola if they don't completely go the google experience way.
When will I get my Nexus 4, arghh!!

Windows and Linux are kings with supporting harward backwards... I can run windows 7 in a year 2000 laptop pc if the graphic card has at least pixel shader windows will even run with aero if not with windows xp driver will works with hwa without aero not a big deal ... But everything else will get self configured with embedded windows drivers... Same applies for Linux

I don't see fragmentation in pc's world.. And you won't see people asking for any updates to hp/Acer /compaq/lenovo/Sony/etc.. If by the time a new windows releases your pc/laptop its still good you just go to Microsoft website and buy a license for it and that's it.. Or in the case of Linux jut download the new release from Linux website...

A pc/laptop with an ancient pentium 4 ht, 1gb ram and at least a gforce 4 gpu will run windows 7 as smooth as any up to date pc and only Google its able to get android to works that way

lets face it, we have all been beta testing android for Google, I've been using android since Motorola milestone with android 2.0 (and many other handsets and now GTab) and its been the same story ever since, people begging/threatening/crying over updates, and when I look back at any android version before ICS I realise there were betas at best (problems with stability/performance or lack of features) and should have never been released to public, so yea, good on Google using us as free beta tester.

Lmao evil Google.. World Wide beta testers in massive proportions.. As 55% of mobile phones in the world runs android xD

Well I think worth the sacrifice in the way that android its killing iOS fast Hahaha

With jelly bean we are getting to a point of stability... I think next android releases gonna be polishing what they already have and no this big changes.. If you compare froyo with jelly bean.. It's like comparing windows 95 with windows 7.. So yeah geniusly Google managed to speed up Years of development and testing making us beta testers.. But at the end I'm happy with it

I refuse to believe that android is on 55% of phones, its just not possible (atm). Smartphones, though, are another issue
