I've honestly never seen a phone die from being dropped (other than screen shatter) or if it did, it was a flip style and the flip broke
(and this is from years of selling cell phones and working in service and repair locations)
guess the hunt is on for a screen protector.
Too bad I can't take the one off my case mate phantom and stick it on and then put it in this case haha

Sorry to say but a screen protector will not stop a screen from shattering/cracking not even a built in screen protector. They are mainly to keep your screen free of scratches.
I have never had a screen protector on my Samsung Epic 4G and the screen still looks like new. If you get a nice case that absorbs impacts (Trident Kraken, Ballistic SG Maxx, Otterbox, ect....) your screen SHOULD not crack/shatter w/o a screen protector. Without trying to crack/shatter it.
But w/o a screen protector it may get a scratch here and there. Keep in mind the gorilla glass is already made to be scratch resistant.
Take a phone in a case with a built in screen protector and bang it into the corner of a square hard wood table and see what happens. Chances are the screen protector will either be right on the screen or flex enough to hit the screen and crack it.
But from a fall straight on the screen if the case is designed well, it'll have enough lip around the screen to take the impact.
Hence no need for a screen protector. Or a removeable one for people who don't want one.
The only benefit to a built in screen protector is the water resistant it would offer.
