What are wakelocks?

What I read here about wakelocks is that they play a handful role in your battery life.. Would someone be kind enough to route me to more detailed information about wakelocks..

Timelapses that the cpu is not in deep sleep afaik, mostly caused by apps or backgroundservices.

Nice to see you've taken the plunge from N8 to android. (this guy is a renowned custom ROM maker for N8)
Changed myself a couple of months ago.Its a lot of new stuff but its not as complicated as it first seems.
Looking forward to your first ROM

I checked in deep and found that Gtalk tried to connect constantly while my wifi and data transfer is off.. Other than that light flow and few other apps were the reasons for these wakelocks.. Any possible way to reduce this time?

Thanks mate.. It's a long way before I will dive in Android Rom modding.., but surely I will in future once familiar with all stuff
