this is probably a dumb question, but whats the difference between unlocking the bootloader with the Asus tool or running the automated root? I have seen quite a lot of concern about the bootloader tool failing, but wouldnt the automated root work anyway? my gf got her infinity a week ago and I was able to use the automated root on it with no issues. I just got mine today but was reading through several different threads and see everyone failing with the official tool and dont know what I should do now. as soon as I pulled mine out of the box I got the .26 update notification and ran the update, but I have not tried to run any unlock or root yet. thoughts?

rooting and unlocking the bootloader are two completely different things.

If you want to be able to install custom ROMs, you will need to unlock the bootloader. Keep in mind, however, that unlocking your bootloader will void your warranty and is un-reversable.

Rooting can be undone - but you cannot re-lock your bootloader.

Hope that helps.

Default no OTA updates but able to unlock

t seems like the consensus here is that if you cannot get OTA updates you cannot unlock the bootloader. No matter what I tried I could not get OTA firmware updates. I had to manually flash 22 and 26 updates. I decided to try unlocking today even though I was already convinced it probably wouldn't work. Well it did work and I am unlocked. So even if you are not able to get OTA updates it may be possible to unlock.

Yes, this was just recently (starting today, I think) fixed by Asus, so both OTA and bootloader unlock are working properly now. YOu will now be able to receive OTA updates as well.

So that's it? I guess I choose the right time to try to unlock. But since I'm now unlocked I believe OTA may not be possible. But that's no big deal. It's very easy to update firmware manually. My concern is that I wanted to unlock so I can try different ROMs when they are available. Since it looks like I finally got an ASUS tablet without issues after owning 4 of them, I plan to keep this for a long time.

it does help, thank you very much. so if I unlock the bootloader with the official Asus tool, then to root I would just install su or supersu?

Well, you don't need to unlock the bootloader to root the device. You can root with a locked bootloader.

I bought my asus off a guy on craigslist. I don't know how old it is,he said a couple of months. It was updated with the latest stuff (JB and latest firmware). Boot unlock tool would produce "server connection error". Had an email conversation with Asus/registered my tablet/finaly got an email advising me to enter bootloader and wipe data. I opened the bootloader and before I even wiped anything the "device unlocked" notification appeared in the top left corner. Now I'm unlocked/rooted/running custom rom. Don't really know if they sent something because if they did they can do it in a way that can't be detected. Of course there is no way to test to see what happened, but for what it is worth there it is. Go after them and you may get what you want.
