/data/media gets wiped every time I wipe /data. So I'm guessing the SD is sharing the partition and gets wiped. How necessary is it to unmount data and wipe it when flashing a fresh rom

You should use factory reset & not use the format data option which specifically states that it will wipe your media.

Thanks. In many rom instructions it recommends to wipe /data but that doesn't seem 100% necessary to me

tried to install via goo app and it cannot find my device. Installed fine using terminal emulator though. Tried reinstalling goo manager but no luck flashing recovery. Could it be I'm on CM10?

That is because the normal wipe data is a factory reset. It wipes out the system but leaves your internal sdcard alone. In twrp they added a feature called format data which wipes everything, including the internal sdcard.

Did I fudge something up?

Followed the directions at TWRP's website.

"su"
"dd if=/sdcard/Download/recovery.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18"

Rebooted into recovery via GooManager.
Currently at a screen that shows:

Could not do normal boot.
