You can put it this way. The phone will have access to 3850mah. This case does not increase the overall battery capacity. It acts in a way akin to an attached portable battery charger.

Phone drains from 1650mah battery. 2200mah battery case recharges the 1650mah battery. This repeats till the 2200mah battery case is depleted. Phone then drains from 1650mah until it goes completely flat.

In this case, it might not be that good because your internal battery is in an extended period of charging

How reliable are these case chargers ? Wont they harm the phone in any way ?

If case is ON, it'll constantly charge internal battery of the phone and reduce lifespan of it.

It is ok, who needs more power while on trip or something.

But it is not healthy for the phone battery to be charged like this. The difference between battery and charger is battery has constant voltage, while charger has spikes (constantly adjusting voltage up and down) that "push" the charge into the battery. Those spikes can be heard as a whistle coming out of new smaller chargers. If a battery is charged with a constant voltage (with another battery) it is never fully charged and charging is slower.

So, you won't harm your battery if you use this device while its battery is full, because phone then stops charging the battery and uses outer supply. You also won't harm it if you use it rarely. But constant use on empty battery will for certainly damage it, shrinking its capacity and shortening its lifespan.

So if you use it, use it only when you have to, try minimizing the usage of the phone while it charges through this device, and after usage charge your phone regularly, via charger.

Default 2800mAh External battery Case

Well Guys I actually bought the 2800mAh a few months ago. I'm not a big fan of these chinese products but I must say I was impressed with it's performance. I was in Jamaica when Tropical Storm Sandy prior to becoming a Hurricane took a swipe of the island. Being Jamaica as it is the power went 1/2 an hour into the storm LOL. The case was fully charged and my phone was down to 55% i think. When the battery went down to 10% I took the phone out of my Otterbox Commuter case( Wish it was a defender lol) and put in in the battery pack. And begun the charge. The It took my battery back up to 98% at which I turned it off not needing the full 100%. Bottom line...with the battery pack I was able to get 3 days out of my phone before resorting to my car charger to bump back the battery pack to 100%.

It is useful in situations like that but would not considering using on the go for work or even on a daily use although it has a nice kickstand.
