If you can tolerate Amazon's lock-in, get the Fire HD.

If you don't need a tablet right now and do want root, then wait. Buying just released hardware expecting root and other hacks out of the gate is dumb.
If I could thank you seven more times, I would.

What???
Edit: Are you saying that the Nexus 7 is the best 7" Tablet, and if you wanted a kindle, then get the 8.9"?
Edit: Anyways, the Kindle Fire HD 7" hasn't come out yet, so we'll just have to wait and see.

Well you got my short hand. I have had kindle fire and a bb playbook pretty much same tab. It's a nice tab. On paper the nexus 7 is better than the kindle fire hd 7inch 200 dollar model. I just sold my nexus 7 to buy the 8.9 fire simply because my main purpose is to watch movies. I tried a few 7 inch tabs nexus 7 is by far the winner. The only thing 7 inch fire hd might offer is faster wifi or maybe slightly better picture quality. I feel on that basis i would go for the better internals ie nexus 7 tegra 3 vs omap 4460 no contest.

I can't wait to try the Fire tomorrow. My Nexus 7 still has 4 days left on my walmart return policy and im in a great position to be able to try both tablets side by side.

But I'll be honest its going to be tough to beat the Nexus.

FYI for those ordering, none of the KF HDs come with the charger, which is a $10 accessory when bought with the unit ($20 by itself). The included micro-USB cable allows charging from the PC, but slowly.

I'd like to know if the Kindle Fire HD can play 720p mkv files, because that's the main use I would have for it.

If you want it for playing MKVs 720p/1080p (anime/movies) you should get Nexus 7 and download MX Player.
This player will play all kind of video formats for you. (I use it for MKVs and RMVBs)
KF HD is locked to Amazon's own app store so it may not offer MX Player (needs confirmation).

Or better yet, get the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 White with keyboard combo ($249). (previous own this but sold it for Nexus 7)
That one has microSD Slot so you can basically carry 32GB additional of storage for anime/movies/shows.
Device: Google Nexus 4 (GSM) on T-Mobile USA
ROM: Paranoid Android 3.10+
Kernel: PA Contrastry
Mods: Touch Control (doubletap2wake)

Devices History:
Phone: iPhone 2G -> iPhone 3GS -> Galaxy S Vibrant -> Nexus S -> Galaxy S2 T989 White -> Galaxy Nexus GSM -> Nexus 4 GSM
Tablet: Archos 70 -> iPad 2 -> Nook Tablet -> Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 -> Nexus 7 -> iPad Mini
