See the op post on page one of this thread. There are two videos posted that show the 480 and 720 image quality.

That said the camera is only 1.3 megapixels so the image/video quality will not be all that great.

Anyway, I did a little poking around for a few minutes just to see if the camera held any more secrets for us. Warning: ahead be kernel-related info!

First off-- the 1.2 megapixel camera uses the VIDEO_MI1040 driver, or the Aptina MI1040 720p camera. You can find the driver in /drivers/media/video/tegra/mi1040.c . (Support was added in this commit.)

Looking at the mi1040.c driver file, I noticed this line at the top:

* Aptina MT9M114 sensor driver

If you go to Aptina's web site, and look under their list of image sensors, for some reason you don't see the MT9M114. But I was able to guess the URL pretty easily and found this helpful page about the MT9M114 sensor, including this sales PDF, which reveals the following specs:

Description:
  • 1.3MP/ 720pHD
Imaging Array:
  • Active Pixels:1296 x 976 (a little better than 720p's 1280x720)
Speed/Output:
  • 30 fps full res
  • 36.7 fps 720p
  • 75 fps VGA
  • 120 fps QVGA
etc.

I have no idea if (1) the driver is telling us the truth about the chip, (2) any of the above fps can be achieved with the driver, or (3) what that max resolution or weird 36.7 fps means.

And is it a 1.3MP camera or 1.2? Can the extra pixels be accessed, maybe for still images? Does anyone even care?

Googling for the mt9m114 brings press releases and little tidbits like "The OV7670 VGA camera can only run at 30fps, the MT9M114 HD camera will be able to run faster with some special modes in a near future"

Anyhoo-- I figured since I found this thread again, I'd report back so anyone who's interested in pushing the hardware take it further, maybe play with the media_profiles to see if anything else can be made to work.
I'm keen to try pushing this hardware further. I don't use the camera on my Nexus 7 anyways as the one on my S2 is superior in every aspect. I don't think much more can be got from it though being a cheapy sensor.

Streaming... as in video calling? No. Only recording.

Haha no idea whatsoever, which is probably why Google left it out in the first place. The only usage case I can imagine is vlogging, or something else where you're just shooting video of yourself.

Someone could find a use for it if they needed to record an event like a birthday meal or Chirstmas day or whatever by sitting their Nexus down with the front facing camera and record it like that, and then you don't have to dedicate your phone to it or something.

That's about the best reason I can come up with.
