Actually if you can stretch to 8.99GBP (from John Lewis, it's probably similarly cheap in other countries), Philips SHE-3590 go in-ear and are better still. There's a thread on head fi about them (or 3580s, which are supposed to be basically the same). Overall nice bass, clear details and lots of blocking out of outside sound. I keep losing this type of earphone, so I have tried lots of the cheapies, including Gumy and Marshmallow.
I have a Sony XB-500 that is quite fun for the Play. The bass is deliberately overpowering and makes the earcups vibrate. It's not everyone's cup of tea for accurate representation of music, but it's fun and intense when things explode on Asphalt or Giga Wing... "Come on!!!" It's not a bad attempt to get an arcade experience on a phone.
My favourite overall headphone to my tastes is the Sennheiser HD25-1, but I'm parted from that now Really nice monitoring headphone that is good at being punchy and lively as well when it needs to be. It clamps the ears quite tight as its sold to DJs who don't want it to fall off their heads, but it eventually gets more comfy with use. The aforementioned Audio-Technica M50 is good too.
