I have an unlocked DVP, on no carrier (bought directly from Dell when I was in the USA), I am currently in Canada on Rogers and successfully updated to 7.8 using the Force update method...
"Simply open Zune and go to the Settings. Now instead of just clicking on the 'Update' button and waiting, what you need to do is disconnect your computer from the internet while Zune is still checking for the update. You need to do this about 3-4 seconds after you see the 'Checking for Updates' progress bar pop up. It may take a few tries, but eventually it should work."

I tried first and it did not update, due to the backup section of the update not working. I then deleted all my music, pictures, videos and most of my apps (I had over 90% of my SD card full). After trying the update again the backup section worked. It first updated to 7.10.8779.8, then to 7.10.8783.12 then to 7.10.8858.136.
It looks a bit weird, having the bigger icons, but i'm sure i'll get used to it.
Just happy the DVP updated
