Yes, you can install Gingerbread based Custom ROMs like CM7.2 or Modified Stock ROMs through recovery. For Eg:-

You can install that modified stock ROM. It looks exactly same as a stock 2.3.6. When I sold my device it had CM7.2 on it and the shopkeeper was very impressed by its features compared to stock. So I don't think they will really look into it, even if you are on stock or custom ROM. Actually many shopkeepers don't even know what a custom ROM is. Anyways its all your choice but I don't think Odin could work without USB. How about Mobile Odin by Chainfire? I'm not sure whether it is supported by Gio.

via Phone

Make sure u have installed USB driver for your phone.

And the correct Odin version (4.42)

U need to connect PC with your phone in download mode.

Does your USB cable works with other devices?

If it is does, then your phone's USB port is damage.
