Default problems with p509

im having a few problems. the first is finding a good rom that will improve my battery life. the other is getting gas buddy to work on the custom rom. i currently use cm10, cant remember other details than that. also editing apn is necessary since im with straight talks att. my last problem is im not able to access 3g, which is supported by my phone and straight talk. im stuck on the edge mobile data.

I'm betting baseband is an issue here. The P509 is an old baseband device. The P509 never got an official update from Froyo to GingerBread which would have then made the P509 a new baseband device. But, it's possible also that the APN isn't correctly setup. I can't say since I'm with Simple Mobile on my P509. The P500, which was originally an AT&T device did. The P509 was originally for TMobile. Slightly different operating frequencies possibly. I'm no expert, just my two cents in an attempt to help.

That's because you installed a P500 ROM, not because you upgraded baseband. "Phone Model" information is read from system/build.prop.

For best battery performance, GB is it. ICS isn't too bad, but worse than GB. JB is even worse than ICS in most cases. As for manually editing your APN's, I have to also, everytime I flash a ROM since I'm with Simple Mobile. I don't know what Gas Buddy is, so I can't help there.

As for your 3G problem, unless your ROM has been setup/instructed to use 2G only, I dunno what to say.
