AmrBanawan,

This does not make any sense unless the SU Binary is not functioning as designed. Your Kindle must be sick, the only option that was in question was the Root option but the other features have been around a while now and after 6,000 plus downloads we would have heard of a problem by now.

Let have you give us the output of Option 27, with the output we will be able to determine what is failing on your Kindle.

At first we thought, maybe the Ad service does something to Video's but no, this was not the case. We just pulled a brand new Kindle out of the box, performed Option 21 Root and then did Option 18 to install Google Play Store, the did Option 23 installed Google Apps.

We then installed Apex Launcher, clicked on the Home icon, went to Amazon Videos, and selected a Prime Video, it began to play!

The only difference between your Kindle and our Kindle is Apex Launcher. Did you run any other Options on your Kindle? We are trying to replicate your problem.

Give us an hour or two, let's have you Install Apex Launcher. In the mean time let us know if you ran any other options on the Kindle. Did you run any of the Audio upgrades? Now that option may effect the Video service, let us know.

Hi, no I did not load any of the other selections. I only loaded the Google Apps but that failed at first time run due to I had the toolkit installed on my D: drive instead of C: drive. I let the installation continue with all of the errors saying C: drive not found errors since I was afraid to interupt it midsteam and cause major out of sync corrupting of the environment. After I let that finish running, I then fixed the toolkit to run under the correct drive and find the directories. It then reran the Google apps install step and let it finish. When it finished I had the google apps installed but the screen presentation was corrupted. The screen did not show the top and bottom navigation menu bars, so I could not navigate nor access the settings any longer. So something must have got corrupted due to the first running of the scripts with the wrong drive letter.
After this I went ahead just for the sake of it and ran the other google assignments step in the toolkit. When that completed the tablet screen returned back to normal showing the top and bottom menu and navigation screens buttons again. So I was almost there... but then noticed that many of the Amazon apps would not lauch from the top menu launch menu list (e.g. - music, web, video, photos, etc). I had some apps that I had installed from the Amazon store (like ES Explorer, Twitter, Facebook and a few others) and those apps were no longer listed in apps nor to be found anywhere. When I tried to download and reinstall ES Explorer from the Amazon store, it said that I already have that installed and to go find it on my local device. It will not allow me to reinstall it! dang Amazon eco system sux!, So then I attempted to install it from the Google Play app store and that also fails to install saying "incompatible device!". I am so frustrated and worried that I messed up my $402 tablet.

Let's get to the main worry I have though... that is why can't I get any response for fastboot mode? My tablet enters fastboot mode showing the words fastboot on the screen. But then it just hangs and sits there unresponsive to any fastboot issued commands. What do I need to change or do to fix this situation? I want to restore back to my initial system images which are backed up both on my tablet and on my PC drive in the folder named "kindlebackup".

Since the backup recovery images are on my tablet already, is there an adb recovery mode on these Kindle HD 8.9 devices where I can restore them back? (instead of using fastboot mode)? I see you are always cautioning and mention about the fastboot cables that you offer for sale... I see many on ebay too. I am wondering if I have to buy one or not. Can you answer me if this situation I am in is normal or seen before or is my tablet in a unique situation here with damaged bootloader?

P.S. - I keep forgetting to also mention that I ran a few other steps trying to see if they would clear up the missing amazon functionalities too.
I ran the "Fix the Android System Permissions and Anamolies" step and that did not fix it either.

BTW, what Windows OS' have you tested your toolkit and drivers on? I am on Windows 8 Pro. Anyone else using Windows 8 successfully with fastboot mode on the HD 8.9? Maybe I should dig up an old Windows 7 PC drive and try to use fastboot on Windows 7?

Hey! I got out my old Gateway netbook which runs Windows 7 32 bit OS and installed your Windows32Bit toolkit and set it all up. And now your provided ADB drivers installed successfully. And now it successfully can issue fastboot mode commands! That's the good news for me.
The bad news is that the step 25 to restore full backup images did not seem to run or work properly. I noticed that the gunzip.exe commands in the RunMe.bat file were not uncompressing the image.gz files. You have to tell gunzip.exe to uncompress the files by specifying the "-d" option as follows: gunzip.exe -d <imagefile.img.gz>
So I edited those likes for step 25, to add the "-d" option and ran the toolkit to try to restore my sysytem. But then it fails with all these messages:

The system cannot find the path specified.

erasing 'userdata'...

And it is still hung sitting there saying "erasing 'userdata'"... I am afraid to break out of this routine and see that it did not restore my image files and might now have went ahead and wiped my data and bricked my tablet? Dang! You've got to improve your scripts to not forge ahead wiping and changing any further if such critical errors take place. Your script should halt and not continue to corrupt up the system if a critical file fails to load or execute. Just a suggestion. I hope my tablet is not in a corrupt state after I control-C out of this restore step now... I will post back result later on if it did or not. Also you need to add mention in your first post that the included drivers do not work on Windows 8 for fastboot mode. talk to you later...

Damn, now the tablet won't boot up anymore. It gets paste flashing the Kindle Logo and a Google Android screen appears asking to sign in.
When I sign in with my google account it goes to the wi-fi settings screen to configure your wi-fi settings. But after setting up my wi-fi config, I am stuck on that screeen with no way out of it because once again the screens top and bottom menus and navigation buttons are no longer displayed or available. I plugged the tablet into my PC to see if I can get adb devices to work and it does not see the device any longer! I am stuck and locked out of any further updating it now. The regular USB windows drive does show up when I plug it into the PC and all my folders are wiped clean! Totally wiped all my data, bookls, everything! WTF?

You really should update your scripts to prevent wiping or changing the system if the script encounters a serious error like it did here not loading my backup images... but still went on to wipe the system data and cache. Ouch! Is there anyway to get back into this tablet now?

Update: I rebooted my tablet again with it connected to the PC. It came up again with the Welcome to Android screen asking if I want to sign into an account. This time I refused it and it went on to ask me to sign in to my Amazon Prime acct to register the device. From there it began refreshing my tablet. So it looks like I got back to near fresh system so far. I am checking it out further to see if I can begin all over using it from this state or if anything else might seem to be corrupt or missing. I see a bunch of icons from my previous old apps that were loaded before the wipe out but not sure they are really installed or active at this time. But for now, a sigh of relief from me that my tablet was not locked up and bricked. I can get back into adb now too. So I am relieved.

Note that at this step in the process, on the Environment Variables page, there are actually 2 sections, each containing a Path variable. The top set of values apply only to the Logged-in User while the bottom set is the System variables (apply to all users system wide).

I assume that you want the user to add the path variable to the System PATH variable and not the user one, right? If so, you should clarify this in the instructions. Or does it not matter?

---------- Post added at 07:19 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:22 PM ----------

I thought I'd reply here rather than continuing my reply in the other thread since I'm now planning to use this software to accomplish the Google Apps setup.

I had asked a few questions in the last post in that thread which you haven't answered yet so since I've got time now, I proceeded to try to figure some of this out on my own.

For starters, I simply renamed the platform-tools directory of my installed Android SDK to platform-tools-temp which I believe should effectively disable it sufficiently for purposes of this app.

In addition, I hadn't installed in the root but instead in a directory beneath my Util directory (which I set up or the sole purpose of running utilities such as these). Assuming I make the necessary adjustments to the Path statement variable, and also to the hard-coded C:\KFFirstAide in the RunMe.bat, will this utility run correctly from within C:\Util\KFFirstAide on my system so I don't have to keep this software in the root of my hard drive? (I saw one person in this thread who had a problem with the software installed on his D:\ drive which is why I'm asking.)

To start, I have removed Gmail_4.0.5.apk, GoogleCalendar.apk, GoogleCalendarSyncAdapter.apk, GoogleContactsSyncAdapter.apk, OneTimeInitializer.apk, and SetupWizard.apk. I then "Cleared Data" on the following services: Account and Sync Settings, Google Account Manager, Google Play Services, Google Play Store, and Google Services Framework. (I didn't see an entry for Google Login Service but maybe that shows up as Google Account Manager in the list since I did see and clear data on that one.

I just now pulled down the latest version of the software and will start the config process for that on my system after I finish dinner. But before I start, I thought I'd inquire about the directory change I made, and if you anticipate any problems because of it, if I make the required changes to the path variable and the text in the RunMe.bat file.

With this tool covering so much ground, and getting updated so often, are there ay plans on including a readme, or help option? (ie Entering, "?27" could print a description of the xLoud and ClearAudio upgrades.) Obviously, this isn't of vital importance, but considering that this thread will hit 100 pages soon, it could be rather helpful.

I concur. There are a several other menu options I'm not sure on either. For example, what's the difference between
13. Backup The Entire Kindle To The KindleBackup Folder (ADB)
-and-
17. Backup Three Kindle Images To The Backup Folder (ADB)

Okay I made a couple of passes trying to install Google Apps using Option #23 and it didn't work. On the first run, the installer spit out the following error for each app file it tried to copy over when it got to that part:

failed to copy 'C:\Util\KFFirstAide64\ChromeBookmarksSyncAdapter. apk' to '/system/app/ChromeBookmarksSyncAdapter.apk': Read-only file system

Unable to chmod /system/app/ChromeBookmarksSyncAdapter.apk: No such file or directory

I launched ES File Explorer and enabled that option that mounts the / and /system partitions in r/w by default but it didn't help the process complete successfully the 2nd time around either, errors in the same place. I did notice that I had to grant ADB Shell process root privleges the first time it was run. I wonder if there's another process that needs to be granted root but I'm not seeing the dialog box for it on my Kindle?

Below is the output from the script running Option 23. Install Signed ICS Google Applications:

Here's something that looks like it could be an issue.

A few lines into the Option23 loop, the following line:

adb shell su -c "cd /data/local/tmp/; rm *"

For some reason, on my Kindle Fire HD, /data/local/tmp is a symlink back to /data/. That's not right is it? If so, then the above command could be extremely dangerous because it could potentially delete everything in my /data directory (or at least the first level since -r option wasn't specified here, but was in a later command). Damn, I hope it didn't! Can anyone please confirm if there's any files located in the root /data directory that this script may have deleted?

ETA - actually it looks like the symlink is intentional. How odd! Because many of the other commands are failing because of this.

adb shell su -c "ln -s /data/ /data/local/tmp" (line 3274)

Exclamation Kindle Fire HD and 2 First Aide - 4.1.45-Beta - Dated 02/20/2013 at 21:50

dekor8tor,

First let me apologize for the delay, we had an emergency today that required my full attention. That error is due to an insure version of ADB Running, please download the update, run Option 21, the beginning WILL fail, ignore and proceed, when you see Restore on the Kindle be sure to click on Restore, the Exploit will run.

This is Software Version 4.1.45-Beta The RunMe is Dated 02/20/2013 at 21:50:

Microsoft Windows Kindle Fire First Aide Universal Version 4.1.45-Beta: KFFirstAide.zip

Microsoft Windows Kindle Fire First Aide 32-bit Version 4.1.45-Beta: KFFirstAide32.zip

Microsoft Windows Kindle Fire First Aide 64-bit Version 4.1.45-Beta: KFFirstAide64.zip

Please unzip the above packages to C:\KFFirstAide make sure the RunMe.bat is Dated 02/20/2013 at 21:50. Before running the software, make sure you do not have another folder inside C:\KFFirstAide named KFFirstAide32, KFFirstAide64 or KFFirstAide. After you Unzip the software you should only have one folder named C:\KFFirstAide, this is critical to proper operation.

Make sure you have a Environment Variable in the Microsoft Windows PATH Statement of C:\KFFirstAide otherwise you will see many 'unable to find ???package???.apk' messages.

Finally, make sure you are running the latests version of Java SE Development Kit 7u13

Question Effffd Up
Ok so i rushed w/ out fully reading and chose option #4 "Completly Restore the KF2 7" 7.2.1." and I let it run all the way through the process. Thing is, my device is a KFHD.
**Did I screw it up, like the disclaimer warned me of ? **

-- I restored to 7.2.3 and it seems to be ok, other than the issue i've been experiencing which caused me to even dive into trying to restore my kindle in the first place.

After rooting, then receiving the OTA update pushed out by Amazon, my rooted kindle started having Video playback issues. I'm talking .mp4's, kindle video, and youtube both the app and from Silk.

I'm trying to avoid sending this back to Amazon. I want to flash to the version that works the best (no vid issues) which i thought would be 7.2.1 - but the program says it's only for KF2 - what should i do
