Default [Q] "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue"

I had a gent come in to work last night looking for a router. I saw he was wearing a galaxy gear and asked about it. He then asked me if I knew anything about rooting. The only rooting I've done is the the first HTC Evo. He has a Galaxy Note 3 now, but has his old Note 2 also.

So we talk awhile and he ends up leaving his Note 2 with me to look at. Whenever you turn it on, it says "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again."

He said he got the Gear, and was impatient waiting for the update for his Note 2. So he looked on here to see if anyone had found a way to apply the update to the Note 2 early. Said he found one and showed it to his buddy. They tried rooting the phone for a few hours and then he left with his buddy. Doesn't know what his buddy did, but when he got it back, it had that error.

He just wants to go back to stock. You guys have any idea what his buddy might of done wrong or a way I can recover and go back to stock?

Update: I been watching a video on youtube n it has gotten me somewhere. I can use Odin now. But as soon as odin gets to sboot.bin, it gives me a fail message. Any idea how to fix this?

It's failing because you're attempting to downgrade. Use Odin to flash twrp recovery. Then boot to twrp recovery and flash a zip from here

You'll be back up n running after that.

If you want to restore him to the current MK4 full firmware (I stripped this away from KIES while it was updating my L900. It's the FULL MK4 MD5 tarball to use in Odin under the PDA tab) go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2536242. At the end you should see my post with a dropbox URL to it. If he doesn't want to end up on 4.3 I'd suggest doing what billard412 said; finding a older ROM or rooted stock ROM to flash in a custom recovery.

That worked, thanks. Both threads helped a lot.
