Her a friend of mine is on Verizon and wants to buy an s4. Do we need to buy a Verizon version s4 out will any unlocked phone work

With CDMA carriers like Sprint and Verizon, you have to use their carrier specific phones. So in the case of your friend, they have to get a Verizon S4.

Any cdma s4 will work on prepaid service such as page plus. Only a verizon model will work with verizon postpaid. If 4g/lte is not important but coverage is, go with page plus. It's a whole lot cheaper.

PM for flashing info if you decide to go that route.
