In hboot, what does it say at the very top of your screen?

Try this: "turn on USB Debugging under Settings>Apps>Development, and disable fastboot under Settings>Power"

I got that from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1751796

idk what happened but it finally worked, now im trying to unlock bootloader (i think thats next for full root) but when I use
fastboot oem get_identifier_token in command prop I get

<bootloader> [ERR] Command error !!!
OKAY [ 0.008s ]
finished. total time: 0.009s

Which is the exact same problem i had beforehand and why i was trying to up grade to gingerbread -___-

Actually, the next step is to get S-OFF. That is the preferred way to unlock the bootloader, not the HTC unlock.

Read the "Revolutionary" section of this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1751796. Revolutionary will give you S-OFF and will also install ClockwordMod (CWM) as your custom recovery. Through the custom recovery you can install custom ROMs, but for the Incredible 2 you'll want to replace CWM with 4EXT afterwards.
