Default [Q] Zero bars then full bars when I make a call

I noticed on both my Note 2 and Note 3 that when idle I have zero or one bar and then when I make a call it jumps to three or four bars. When I hang up it goes back down to zero or one.

Is this normal? Is this a power saving feature? I'm not missing any calls or texts but just wondering why is is happening.

You mihgt notice it also drops from LTE to 3G, or at least it does for me, when a call is being made. I don't have the detailed answer for you, but I can tell you that it has to do with the phone aspect and the call being made. You're not the only one.
