Well os x has a linux kernel but the heart of the os is on darwin, which is *bsd so it's quite normal that it won't work. Btw really useful for newbies, continue with your work brood we support you!

maybe a stupid question, is there a difference betwen entering download/recovery mode between this way and with the normal way (hardware buttons)?

sometimes Odin can fail if you are using this way
