If its not working you can try these apps to torubleshoot:
- OTG Troubleshooter
- USB Host Diagnostics

If the USB drive is not mounting then try these:
- USB OTG Helper
- StickMount

Both mounting apps and the stock mounting method mount the USB drive at different paths.
I tried all the recommended apps, nothing seems to detect the USB stick mounted. I know the USB stick and cable works, because when I reboot into recovery I can back up and restore from otg USB.

What else can I do to figure out why I can't mount the otg USB?

Fixed!!! I finally got otg working!!!

So here's what I did. I'm running cm11. I flashed elementalx kernel but one thing I did different was I did NOT enable usb fast charge.

So from what it seems if you have USB fast charge otg doesn't work!

I hope this helps others...

If you have problems with otg and a custom rom you can flash the Bulletproof kernel.
Since there has been no mention of drives I'll add some info.
I can use otg with 2.5 inch drives without external power. (both fat32 and ntfs formats). 3.5 inch drives require external power.
I use stickmount pro (requires root).
I'm running stock firmware and kernel. - KOT49H

Not working for me on Nexus 7(2013)...having 4.4.2/KOT49H with Bulletproof kernel and fastcharge disabled.
OTG trouble shooter shows all good, but EZ Explorer do not show my USB disk, and keyboard/mouse also do not work.

Same cable and keyboard/mouse works on SGS3

ASUS support replied that my device do not support OTG ...its Nexus 7 2013 WiFi 16 GB model

To get drives to work I had to install stickmount pro but mice and keyboards do not need any extras. *Here is the cable I use. *I retested my setup and everything works as previously described. - Nexus 7 (2013) 32gig. *I'm running the stock kernel but with custom roms I use Bulletproof kernel.
I'm guessing you mean ES Explorer as I can't find EZ Explorer. *It works for me mounted as usbStorage/sda1 using ES Explorer, etc.
Note: stickmount requires some extras placed in your sdcard root.
