Default Apps to indentify background apps

How can i know what apps are running in the background and are eating my battery. Thanks

Use Betterbatterystats or Wakelock Detector.

What if the apps that detect background apps are background apps themselves? Do they detect themselves? In the background?

Don't be so confusing!
I have noticed that Wakelock Detector even can fulfill its purpose when the app itself is completely killed.
