Default can't flash / boot into custom recovery?

I've tried many times to flash CWM or TWRP and the phone keep booting back into android as normal no matter what I try?

It's a UK retail handset (bought from phones4U).

Has anyone else had this issue? I want to flash 4.4.2 onto it, but need custom recovery to do it!

Many thanks

I had this same problem on my Motorola Atrix HD. I had to rename the default recovery file by adding .bak to the file name using Root Explorer. Not sure if that would be the case here.

Are you sure recovery has not been installed, just a thought when in bootloader you select recovery with vol key - and enter with the vol key, then the screen looks as it is booting into white moto g logo then into recovery. If you select the revovery option with Power key the phone will reboot, I hope this is the case. I have flashed many times.
