They're stored in a SQL database in the /data directory

You can back your sms/mms database up with Titanium backup. When you start Titanium go to the center Backup/Restore tab scroll down to Messages (SMS&MMS) back it up, you can put your backup folder on an external sdCard, the setting is in Preferences. Hey, you can backup your Personal dictionary also User Dictionary 4.3........
