Hi all,

I just got a Motorola Razr Maxx HD (XT912) off Craigslist ($50). The specs are below:
system version: 98.72.16
OS: 4.1.2
Kernel: Feb 1, 2013
Build: 9.8.20-72
Build Date: Feb 1, 2013

I received a notice that there is a software update to 98.72.165

Reading briefly within the forums, looks like there is a newer version (9.30.1)?

I would like to root, install TWRP, and maybe add a custom ROM.

I see that there is a root method now available for the latest version, but should I root now (and what is the most successful method), or install the OTAs, and then root?

I do not intend on using this as phone, just as a wifi device for my son (finally retiring the Charge).

thanks!

I believe your in the wrong section.

Your phone is a xt912 droid Razr maxx (not hd). Do not accept that update until you confirm there is a root method available. See here http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2192467

The newer droid RAZR maxx hd is a xt926 and its latest update is 9.30.1.

Your only option for recovery on the xt912 is safestrap by hashcode. http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1391900
