Sorry if my questions are silly but I'm not very well versed in the technical aspects of Android :P

They extract the stock kernel from the stock rom which was released as a leak ( the Poland kit Kat leak) and just place them into there custom rom. Stock kernels don't need tweaking etc they are just placed in custom roms
