I've been trying to backup the data for a game called pocket trains on my phone however I cannot seem to do so. I've tried helium but it gives me an error at the end and refuses to backup no matter what I try. Apparently the Xperia S and Z have backup restrictions set by Sony?

Helium does often give errors, I suggest trying Titanium Backup

I agree, use Titanium Backup, it's much better.
But you need to root your device beforehand...
