In this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2643041 from 10.02.2014 somebody got a softbrick after updating whatsapp on stock 4.1.2 !!!!

I got this update-notification yesterday too but will not install until is it confirmed as non-brick.

Mine is fine with v2.11.150. I don't see a way how an app update could brick a phone.

An App like WhatsApp can't brick the phone, it's just an assumption.
