Yea its wierd you had the phone crashing as i havent had that at all.
Tip: For me to get to recovery: Shut down phone completely, then turn on the phone and when im doing that i press power+volume up until the back and menu buttons light up 2 time, bam in twrp. That always seems to get me into recovery from a start-up.
Edit: Using AT&T E980 version with AT&T sim,
I finally figured it out. Turns out the custom kernel is no longer compatible after the 3-3 update and was causing the problem. Looks like we no longer have a working custom kernel for the latest cm11.
