Xperia z Ultra (C6833) 14.2.A.0.290 "Generic SG"
Confirmed working

Little notes I made for myself in case I needed to go through this again, someone might find this useful:

0. put UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.86.zip to sdcard
1. turn off
2. start flashtool
3. vol+ plug in (see fastboot mode in flashtool)
4. start Flash.bat
5. enter 1
6. unplug, power up
7. press vol + (or -) when led is purple
8. install supersu zip
9. turn off
10. vol + plug in (fastboot mode)
11. enter 2 in Flash.bat
12. unplug reboot

That would be because you nuc'd during the flash of 290.

Are you still rooted?
Do you have an unlocked bootloader?

This method is the only one that worked for me but I have other problems now which I have detailed in the noob thread below:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...postcount=9206

Hope that I can get some guidance here. Thanks!

Hi there,

I have a Xperia Z Ultra C6833 with unlocked bootloader which I rooted using the method described in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2576006

After managing to root the device, I discovered several issues with detecting my sim card (slow to detect), connectivity (no internet intermittently) and google play store (hangs and shuts down). In a panic, I tried several solutions to re-flash my device, including flashing a boot.img using quickimg tool as taught in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2569904 at which time I discovered that I could not access the internal memory of my device and copy the zip file of the custom rom into it.

I then redid the first method (as the zip file is still in the internal memory of my device). I now have a device that boots up but hangs very often.

Can anyhow help teach me how to undo some of the mayhem or make further changes (for example install some stable version of ROM) so as to be able to use my phone happily again. Some of the issues I encounter that I need help with:

A. I can't seem to get access to my internal memory. When I plug in the phone, the computer detects the device and sony pc companions pops up, a second window pops up telling me to upgrade my software, but there is no way I can upgrade my software. My computer also identifies the device for an instant before losing the detection. This cycles on and off indefinably. When I try to drag a ROM.zip file into internal memory, it shows an error.

B. My phone can no longer boot into recovery mode (I never tried it previously). I read that I need to get into recovery mode to use ADB to push the ROM.zip file into my phone internal memory, but when I switch off my phone and reboots it, the LEDs do not light it and when I press the vol up and down buttons at various times during the booting sequence, it does not bring me to the purple LED (recovery mode). The only time I get a purple LED is if I go into fastboot mode and run step 1 of jackie099's method or when I reflash the boot.img using the quickimg tool. During these times, I only get the purple LED for a few seconds before CWM recovery loads.

C. Following up from item B, when CWM recovery loads, I try to use ADB but ADB is unable to detect the device when I try to use ADB shell. Not sure what this means but without write access to my internal memory and ADB access, I seem to be unable to flash a new ROM.
What a little mess we have here.
Can you answer these questions, they will help decide where the phone is at and what needs to be done:
  1. What is the current firmware?
  2. Are you rooted? (I'm guessing not fully)
  3. Do you have an unlocked bootloader?
  4. Can you and do you want to unlock it?
  5. Do you have a TA back up?
Where do you want to end up, What ROM/FTF etc?

Forget about adb, can be very dangerous if used incorrectly.

If you are in a hurry then these steps should work:
Downgrade to .532 http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2593918
Root and install recovery using this installer (thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2647492) download ZU-lockeddualrecovery[VERSION]-BETA.installer.zip from http://nut.xperia-files.com
At this point you should have a stable 4.2.2 sony firmware, it is then up to you if you want to backup the TA (highly recommended) and then unlock the BootLoader.

Bit I would answer the above question first and take it slowly

Hi Blueether,

Thanks for responding and reaching out.

I am in the office right now and the Phone is locked away in a drawer at home (I needed to keep it away from me for a while after many hours of exhausting reading up on this new and dangerous topic of rooting/rom flashing). Will answer what I can first and provide a full answer again in a while.

1. firmware - need to verify.
2. I have supersu, does it mean I am fully rooted? How can I tell?
3. I managed to unlock the bootloader - yes. This was verified previously when I go into *#*#SERVICE#*#* or was it developer options...
4. As above, I believed it was locked.
5. No TA back up. I only learned about these things later on after I was forced to read alot more when the phone screwed up...
6. I would like to get a phone in working condition. Does not have to be stock. I am hoping to learn more along the way and end up with a rooted phone with a nice stable ROM that enables me to enjoy the phone properly and more.

Once again thanks!

Thanks for the answers. As the bootloader is unlocked life is simple and the above steps aren't needed

All the below assumes that the BL is unlocked:
  1. The first thing I would do now is to get a clean FTF on to the phone I would go with the .290 or the newer .136. Some people seemed to have a few issues with the .136 firmware but I never had any for the about 1 day that it was on my phone. The FTF can be found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2453921 there is a EU .136 FTF on page 41 as the one in the OP has a broken link.
  2. Flash that with the latest Flashtool http://www.flashtool.net/download.php
    • Lightning bolt icon
    • Flash mode
    • Select FTF
    • Leave all defaults
    • Hit "Flash" and wait for dialogue
    • Connect phone (powered off) to the PC while holding the Vol. down key
The phone will bu no longer rooted, but we will get to that...
  3. Power on the phone if you want to and check that it's stable - should be
  4. Download SuperSu Update zip http://download.chainfire.eu/supersu and copy to SD Card
  5. Download Recovery https://mega.co.nz/#!R8sxyRhb!-75H5a...bjtiTJutgRY75w this is jackie's one
  6. Power off the phone
  7. Flash Recovery with flashtool
    • Lightning bolt icon
    • Fastboot mode
    • Connect phone (powered off) to the PC while holding the Vol. down key
    • Select boot.img from above download
    • close window when flashed (about 2 sec)
  8. Boot into recovery - press up or down vol. just after power on when the LED goes purple (? I think maybe amber or pink...)
  9. Install SuperSu update from recovery This will install the latest chainfire Su/root
  10. Reboot

You will now have a uptodate Stock phone with root and recovery
