I know there was a way for MK2 (Galaxy S4) where you could downgrade your Baseband using Safestrap and then use Regionunlock and it would get rid of your SIM-lock too (http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?t=2595457). Is there a similar method for the Note3?

The region unlock trick use to work with the original software release ending in MI9. The MJ5 update removed the trick so now you must use an actual sim unlock code. Sim unlock codes can be obtained for free from AT&T customer service IF you are the original owner and say you're going overseas for some time. If you are not the original owner and are on the MJ5 build, you MUST buy a sim unlock code.
