Unhappy Sony IM10 Miracast adapter: a desaster

I received my Sony IM10 Miracast-adapter yesterday.

Unpacked it and connected it to my Samsung UE TV: Samsung switched on by itself showing the IM10 start screen ..........

So far, so good, I was happy ..............

Connection to my ZU and Z1 via NFC worked flawless (on first connection You just have to verify by pressing the button on the IM10). Works also nicely with the NFC - tag provided together with the IM10. Connecting the devices takes about 15 seconds.

So far, so good, I was VERY happy .................

And then came the disappoinments (setup: ZU/Z1 2m away from each other and 10 cm: both the same):

1. Base lag: 0,5 - 1 seconds
2. Sliding through the screens results in highly pixelated respresentations on TV-screen
3. Writing emails and watching static webpages (Chrome Browser) has just lag, scrolling longer webpages results in pixelated and sometimes frozen representations on TV-screen
4. Music streaming: is IMPOSSIBLE due to crackling and "swallowed" passages
5. Video streaming (Youtube, vids taken with ZU- and Z1-cam) results in freezes every 60-120 seconds, at faster movements in the vid pixelation is beyond recognition on the TV-screen, sound is "swallowed" for 5-10 seconds (and I was just watching a stand-up comedy vid on Youtube where almost NOTHING moves). Twice connection fully dropped and had to be reestablished via NFC.
6. Photos: quality is desastrous: I compared the same photo on Picasa once from the Samsung Smart-Hub Picasa App and streamed from ZU/Z1 Picasa-App: the quality via IM10 reminded me of the "good old" 640x480 px-days. Same with the original photos taken with ZU or Z1.

Conclusion.

IF IM10 would cost 10-15€ the money would be wasted anyway, but it wouldn´t hurt. 99.- € is robbery for such a non-quality, not even providing basic flawless function as promised.

IM10: a complete desaster .................

Thanks for the information, as I was going to purchase too. Is the device firmware upgradeable? As at least sony is updating the Qx10 and other devices after they rushed them to market, with basic functions missing. So perhaps they will update too. Will hold of purchasing thanks to your.findings. It's a pity Sony take so long to release and then then don't have the basics! Hope for you they do update!

Default Netgear ptv3000

Sorry if I'm off topic here.
I was looking to get a Sony IM10 if it would provide a service beyond that of the NETGEAR PTV3000, but it seems worse as described here..

I have a NETGEAR PTV3000 and use it with an XPERIA M (C1905) which has an Adreno 305 GPU.

PTV3000 Firmware: v2.4.26 (latest as of 19/01/2014)

XPERIA M has a 480x854 pixel 4" screen (FWVGA).

Phone has good 5GHz WiFi signal with PTV3000 box not more than four metres away.

I use a Logitech USB K800 keyboard and M950 mouse.

I am testing with a DELL U2410 24" Full-HD IPS monitor, but have also used a Sony Bravia 40" HDTV (Sans Full-HD)
Images do look better on the Sony Bravia 40" HDTV screen compared to the Full-HD WUXGA (1920x1200) monitor resolution.

I have a 720p mp4 video with 2ch audio, we use to test Android phone builds and it can be seen to be very slightly 'choppy', however the audio track is maintained through the video. The image is still watchable, but you perceive it to be ever so slightly unnatural.

Watched another video with following format:

Video: MKV H.264 25fps 720x576(HW acc)
Audio: AC3 (44.1KHz) 6 ch

The video was watchable, but there was a very sight frame drop, which is noticeable throughtout the video.

Streamed some .flac encoded music at 1.4Mbps using Neutron Music Player from my NAS
Using Sennheiser headphones plugged into my DELL monitor 3.5mm output port, music sounds very good
No skip, loss of sound, breakup or anything.

If I edit a OfficeSuite Pro MSword document, there is a noticeable lag in typing, but it's not a problem with a keyboard.
Mouse pointer action doesn't feel very natural and speeding it up and/or slowing it down didn't find a natural sweet spot.
Mouse is still quite usable, but not quite natural with pointer motion.

On a 24" IPS Full-HD monitor, pictures and images are viewable, with quality maintained for large images and upscaled for low quality images.
The screen icons look like someone draw them in with a child's colouring in crayon.

I am not sure if this is a FWVGA screen being upscaled to a WUXGA (1920x1200) monitor resolution, or if it's the PTV3000 downgrading the image, I would suggest is the monitor upscaling low res images in the case of Android screen icons.

"swishing" through screens was not a problem and no pixelation or artifacts during transition.

Youtube videos are quite watchable, but some seem to have a lag.
On my PC the same videos had the same lag as my XPERIA M.
So one may have to be careful as to how much lag is introduced by the Internet and not Miracast

No freezes or audio stop/start noted over an hour of testing different scenarios with the NETGERA PTV3000.

So in summary I would suggest the NETGEAR PTV3000 has a slight edge over the Sony IM10 as described by @troed on an XPERIA M
The one area that the NETGEAR PTV3000 does appear to preform considerably better as described here, is streaming audio.

Hello,
have been updated since then? I hesitated with PTV300 netgear and Sony IM10, I think I'll take the Netgear, browsing internet on Google Chrome is it fluid? Thank you for your answers

I'm confused ... what really is the difference between all these transmission mode?

- Chromecast (I owns and I can not do "mirroring" with ultra Xperia Z) but the nexus 5 can do it, so to see ...

- Miracast (with SonyIM10 or Netgear PTV3000)

what is the best mode of transmission? most fluid, the most reactive?

thank you

Miracast is just mirroring screen of your phone\tablet\notebook. What you see on phone, you will see on display.
Chromecast is transfer data like a YouTube video direct to Chromecast, which is decode it. But you cant mirror full screen of phone, from PC you can only mirror one tab of Google Chrome (and it will be laggy).
I drink vodka for the Android Development together with my bear and matrioshka.
Spasibo, tovarischi!
