Question Are these the correct steps to root, s-off and install a custom ROM?

I have never rooted and flashed a ROM on a phone before, only on tablets, so I am uncertain on some things and want to clarify the basic steps.

I have a completely stock VZW HTC One Max that has received the Kit Kat OTA.

From looking here in the forums, if I want to run a custom rom, I will need to do the following:

1 Gain root with weaksauce
2 Gain S-Off: with firewater (http://firewater-soff.com/)
3 uninstall weaksauce
4 Use TWRP 2.7.0.0 to
a. Do a backup, Just in case....
b. Flash the custom recovery

I am also a bit concerned about all my phone related stuff (Contacts, etc), are there any special steps I need to ensure I can easily get them back once I finish up the rom, install? I have them all as Google/Gmail contacts right now.

Am I missing anything?? Is there any info I need to post here that will help you recommend the correct steps to achieve my goal?
Hmm, I wonder what fdisk.exe does????

Well all sounds good on the root s-off recovery part and contacts will comeback if there stored in Gmail ..call logs sms and mms need to backed up I use easy backup from the play store easybkup needs to 've set as the default sms app before transferring and it will give you the option to change it back to messages after the transfer

Thanks. I will start getting everything together to do this. Am apprehensive as this is the first phone I have done this on. Tablets have been pretty easy to do it on, but if I screw the pooch, I am out a phone until I can get everything back right.
