Google GPS navigation "waiting for location"...

New stock N7 showed "waiting for location" the first time I used it. Location service works fine, and trip routing works OK from home where I have a wi-fi connection.

But when I'm in the car there is no internet, so how can it fetch maps?

I noticed the search function "make this map area available offline" > "pre-loading maps ...%". So the obvious question: How do you pre-load the entire sate, or even better USA & Canada?

As Google Maps mainly rely on raster maps, preloaded cache for an entire state would occupy dozens of Gb, for USA and Canada in hi res this would sum up to Tb. IMHO take a look at special auto-nav progs like IGO Primo or Navitel Navigator (which use vector maps for traffic nets). If you'd prefer to stick with free easy-to-use utils, supporting both vector and raster maps, there are many using OpenStreetMaps. One of my favs is RMAPs 0.9.4, but somehow it seems to be withdrawn from market
