Whats the difference apart from the fact that AOSP roms have more customization?

From the user's perspective, that will likely be the only noticeable difference. However, from the dev's standpoint, there will be a lot more effort to get everything working since they will be compiling android from source and manually making modifications to get everything working. As a user you are also freely available to view, and/or modify any and all portions of the source code and compile from the source yourself if that should be something you're interested in.

I agree with what's here.

The reason I'm anxiously awaiting AOSP is because of profiles. I don't know why google can't adopt that feature. I mean everyone should have a work profile, home profile, and car profile; it's 2014! Until then I'm dependent upon Tasker to automate the process for me, using more resources.

For me, the only main difference I care about is Profiles.
