Default [Q] Need pointers on custom roms

Hello everyone, super noob here. I have an S4, T-Mo variant M919. I'm still on 4.2.2 but want to upgrade to a custom kitkat ROM. My reasoning/impression is the official kitkat version would not allow apps which requires root permission, nor tethering on my $30/month walmart plan. So I'm considering trying these ROM:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2682842

My questions are:
Are these roms compatible with my S4? (The current baseband is M919UVUAMDL, and build number is JDQ39.M919UVUAMDL)
What's the best way to install these custom roms?
Will I lose anything by upgrading (I've seen some posts about Knox-enabled bootloader, plus from experience with Apple iDevices, once you upgrade it's hard/impossible to go back)
Do I have to root first?
Is there a tutorial I can follow?

Thanks so much in advance for your help.

If you are serious about rooting and upgrading then you must follow instructions completely. It is very important that you follow every step to make sure you retain your warranty and don't trip Knox. Now that we got that out of the way let's get started.
Do you know what Odin is and how to use it? If you do then go to the link I provided and download Odin, Root_MDL.Zip and TWRP. I recommend using Twrp recovery because is compatible with the majority of Roms. Once you have downloaded those files come back and let me know and I'll give you the next step.

Thanks for the pointer guys. So as long as I follow the instructions in the [INFO][HOWTO][ROOT] May 7th OTA - M919UVUAMDL thread, I won't trip Knox? Also that thread started last year, so has anything else developed that I should know about before proceeding?

Absolutely! If you follow instructions you will definitely keep your warranty. This is why I gave you 1 step only. Knox won't be tripped so don't worry. Once you get rooted I will point you in the right direction. You can send me a pm when you're ready if you like and I can walk you through it step by step.
