Nandroid backup
The first part of your journey is to learn about how to perform a Nandroid backup. There are lots of resources available if you search XDA and/or Google.

Here is just one - http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1713869 (which points to a decent external article of the subject)

You will need to get a custom recovery onto your device in order to perform the backup. Personally, I used TWRP and have found it to be excellent far. Good luck!
